Restore Twin Lakes Barn Pond and its Associated Wetlands

The Issue

I'm a resident of Twin Lakes, CO, and have watched with dismay as our beloved Barn Pond has been destroyed by irresponsible development. Water has flowed to the area of the Barn Pond since at least 1891, and the Barn Pond is one of the most photographed spots in Colorado.  A recent project by a local developer has blocked the stream that feeds into Barn Pond, leading to the drying of the pond and the destruction of the stream and associated wetlands. This not only erases a vital part of our community's natural beauty and history, but also disrupts local ecosystems and biodiversity.

What was once a flourishing wetland habitat and a sight that brought joy to locals and tourists alike, is now an unsightly mud flat. The Colorado Division of Wildlife has noted wetlands as being critical habitat areas for many common species, with 75% of wildlife species being dependent on wetlands ("Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy" report, Colorado Division of Wildlife, 2005).

Illegal diversion of water bodies is not only environmentally harmful but also legally questionable. Federal and Colorado law mandate that any dredging or change to a stream, which affects its amount, timing, or use, must go through a specific legal process. This has not been complied with in the case of Barn Pond.

This petition seeks strong action from local, state, and federal authorities to restore the Barn Pond and its stream and wetlands to their original state. We urge them to enforce relevant laws and regulations against the developer responsible and ensure protocols are in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Join me to preserve the Twin Lakes Barn Pond, our community's natural heritage. Stand up against these damaging practices and demand restoration of our beautiful landscape. Please sign this petition now. Let's make our voices heard and save our beloved Barn Pond.
