Restore Topsham Library to its Original Space for the Community's Benefit

The Issue

As a resident of Topsham, UK, I am deeply concerned about the current state of our beloved library. The transfer of land from Devon county council to Estuary League of Friends was poorly executed, resulting in the library facilities being left out of the transfer. This oversight has led to taxpayers now renting space in a building on land that they previously owned.

The present room allocated for our library is simply too small and fails to meet the needs of our community. It lacks sufficient space to accommodate wheelchair users comfortably and restricts their access to valuable resources. This exclusionary environment goes against our principles as an inclusive society.

Library users and potential users may be put off by the restricted space and use the library less. If this happens it may lead to the library being closed because there are too few people using it. We must make sure this does not happen

Furthermore, the area designated for children within the library is completely inadequate. Our young readers deserve a welcoming and engaging space where they can explore their imaginations and foster a love for reading. Unfortunately, due to limited space constraints, their experience is compromised.

It is essential that we restore Topsham Library back to its original larger space within Estuary League of Friends' building. By doing so, we can ensure that all members of our community have equal access to educational resources and cultural enrichment opportunities.

We call upon Devon County Council to rectify this situation by incorporating the library facilities into the transfer agreement with Estuary League of Friends permanently. This will not only secure a dedicated space for our cherished library but also honor taxpayers' previous ownership rights over this land.

Together, let us make it clear that restoring Topsham Library's original larger space is crucial for fostering inclusivity and providing adequate resources for all residents in our community.
