Restore the SAVE Plan and Stop Punishing Student Loan Borrowers

Restore the SAVE Plan and Stop Punishing Student Loan Borrowers
The Issue
We were told that higher education was the path to a better life. That if we worked hard, went to college, and earned our degrees, we’d have a shot at stability. But for millions of Americans, that promise has become a trap—and the Trump administration’s dismantling of the SAVE plan just made it worse.
The SAVE (Saving on a Valuable Education) plan was introduced under President Biden to give student loan borrowers some breathing room. It capped payments based on income and paused interest for those who couldn’t afford to pay. It was never perfect, but for many of us, it was a lifeline.
Now, that lifeline has been cut.
Under the Trump administration, borrowers are being forced out of the SAVE plan and back into repayment schemes that cause interest to pile up again—even if we can’t afford to make payments. For people like Faith, a 33-year-old in North Carolina now paying an extra $300 a month, it’s devastating. For Jennifer, a public school teacher trying to start a family, it's the difference between security and survival.
This isn’t just about numbers—it’s about real lives. It’s about people putting off having children, buying homes, or getting the mental health care they need. It’s about a generation that feels like we’re being punished for trying to do things the “right” way.
We call on the U.S. Department of Education and President Trump to reinstate the SAVE plan or immediately halt the accrual of interest on federal student loans under income-driven repayment plans.
The goal of a repayment plan shouldn’t be to bury people in debt—it should be to help them repay responsibly without sacrificing their futures. This change doesn’t just hurt individuals—it holds back families, communities, and our economy.
We’re not asking for handouts. We’re asking for fairness. For dignity. And for a government that doesn’t pull the rug out from under those trying their best.
Please sign this petition and demand better from our leaders.
