To: Mayor Todd Gloria and the San Diego City Council

​We, the residents of San Diego and members of the Iranian-American community, formally request the replacement of the current flag displayed at the House of Iran in Balboa Park with the historical Lion and Sun (Shir-o-Khorshid) flag.

This modification is essential as the Lion and Sun flag is a 3,000-year-old emblem symbolizing Iranian heritage, justice, and liberty, truly representing the Iranian populace. In contrast, the current flag is associated with a regime from which many San Diegans have sought refuge to attain freedom.

Balboa Park is recognized as a center for culture and inclusivity. Displaying a symbol that inflicts distress and suffering upon the local Iranian-American community is inconsistent with our city's core values.

The overwhelming majority of the Iranian diaspora in San Diego identifies with the Lion and Sun flag. It is imperative that our public spaces accurately reflect the identity of the communities they serve.

We respectfully urge the City of San Diego to align with historical accuracy and permit the House of Iran to display the flag that genuinely embodies the spirit and legacy of Iran.
