Restore Safety on Rand Airport Road in South Hills

Restore Safety on Rand Airport Road in South Hills
The Issue
Every day, as a resident of South Hills, Johannesburg South, I find myself navigating the treacherous conditions of Rand Airport Road. Recently, I suffered damage to my car—a rim and tire from the unforgiving potholes, followed the very next day by a shattered window from a flying stone. The situation has reached a critical point, and immediate action is necessary.
Rand Airport Road has become a danger zone for commuters and residents alike. The absence of street lighting further exacerbates the risk, leaving drivers vulnerable during nighttime travels. This lack of illumination endangers everyone, contributing to countless accidents and near misses.
Equally concerning is the squatter camp that has emerged nearby. The residents there frequently resort to burning tires and blocking the road in protest, causing significant disruptions and jeopardizing our safety. We urge the authorities to address this issue with sensitivity and urgency, relocating those affected to safer, designated areas.
Furthermore, the road itself is disastrously neglected. After initial work by the City of Johannesburg and SANRAL, who scraped the tar with the intention of road repairs, the project was abandoned—leaving behind treacherous potholes that resemble water ponds. These obstacles are not only eyesores but also hazardous to all vehicles passing through.
The clutter of trees in the median adds to the chaos, obstructing drivers' vision and contributing to potentially deadly situations. These trees must be removed to ensure unobstructed visibility and safe passage for all road users.
We call upon the local government and SANRAL to take immediate corrective action. Prioritize the completion of road repairs, install adequate lighting, clear the obstructive greenery, and manage the squatters' relocation appropriately. Our community's safety depends on it.
Help us make Rand Airport Road a safe, navigable thoroughfare once again. Sign this petition and join us in demanding swift and decisive action from those responsible for the maintenance and safety of our roads.
