The Issue

I'm writing this from a place of genuine concern and love for the Holland Lighthouse, a historical and cultural icon located in Holland, Michigan, known for its unique beauty and the significant role it plays in our community. It means a lot not only to me but also to thousands of other residents and tourists who visit our town.

The lighthouse stands on federal property, a fact that means it should be accessible to everyone. Yet, despite this, the Macatawa Park Cottagers' Association has restricted public access, effectively denying the majority of people the chance to enjoy this beautiful landmark, which is rightfully for all.

Such access restrictions undermine the ownership that every taxpayer has over public federal properties. It's unfair and unjust, creating a sense of exclusion and detachment from a piece of history and beauty that belongs to us all equally.

To restore justice and access, we're calling for the opening of dialogue with the Macatawa Park Cottagers' Association and the relevant federal agencies to ensure that the lighthouse is accessible once more. This change can be achieved by negotiating terms where public rights are prioritized while simultaneously addressing any legitimate concerns the Association might have, such as security or maintenance.

According to Public Land Statistics issued by the Bureau of Land Management, federal lands are meant for the enjoyment and use of all citizens, and should facilitate community engagement, rather than hinder it. Limiting access to the lighthouse not only contradicts these principles but also diminishes the cultural and historical appreciation of this revered landmark.

Visitors and residents alike contribute to the local economy, often drawn by the charm of the lighthouse. By allowing access, we also promote tourism, benefiting local businesses and fostering a sense of pride and ownership within our community.

I urge everyone who shares this sentiment to stand together and advocate for change. By signing this petition, you're not just supporting the reopening of the lighthouse but also endorsing the belief that public heritage should be enjoyed by everyone, without unnecessary barriers.

Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and help us reclaim access to the Holland Lighthouse so that it can continue to be a beacon of hope and unity for all.
