The issue

Old Jim Lindley Park in Kawana - North Rockhampton is an under utilised park in our community.  The park is central to Glenmore State School, Richardson Rd Shops and the neighbourhood that surrounds it. Local families, children, and residents have the right to enjoy nature and recreation just as much as those in the newer estates in Rockhampton. However, over the past three decades, the park's amenities have significantly declined. The playground, once had more climbing equipment with slides and has been stripped of these essential components that were there in the past and not replaced. Despite our community faithfully paying rates, which contribute to local development and maintenance, the park play equipment remains neglected.

While the community is grateful that RRC has recently installed a shade shelter over the existing equipment, the placement of the shelter now appears to constrain the size and scope of any future playground upgrade. It seems unfortunate that the shade infrastructure has been installed before determining the long-term playground design, effectively putting the cart before the horse.

The absence of age-appropriate, safe play equipment at Old Jim Lindley Park deprives our children of a vital opportunity for outdoor play.   Families should be able to walk or ride to their local park however this large park is grossly underused and provides an ample opportunity to contribute to our children’s development through appropriate play equipment.

Playgrounds are not mere luxuries; they are fundamental to promoting physical health, encouraging social interaction, and fostering cognitive development in young minds. It's crucial that Rockhampton Regional Council takes action to restore Old Jim Lindley Park playground, transforming it back to its former glory with safe, modern, and engaging play equipment.

Many comparable communities across Queensland have successfully refurbished their parks, benefiting both recreationally and aesthetically. Funding options, including state grants for community development and local partnerships, can be explored to ensure this project is feasible and sustainable in the long term.

Join me in urging the Rockhampton Regional Council to prioritize the installation of new and improved play equipment in Old Jim Lindley Park. By signing this petition, you are supporting a call to action for the benefit of all current and future generations who deserve a safe and enjoyable place to play.

Together, we can make a significant difference in our community's quality of life.
