Restore 24-Hour Access at Planet Fitness Trumbull for Member Accessibility

The Issue

We, the members of Planet Fitness Trumbull, are respectfully requesting the restoration of 24-hour access following the recent change in operating hours to a 5:00 AM opening time. This adjustment has significantly impacted a portion of the membership base who rely on late-night and very early-morning access due to work schedules, family obligations, and personal health routines.

Many members, including shift workers, healthcare professionals, first responders, and those with nontraditional schedules, depend on overnight and early access to maintain consistent fitness routines. The previous 24-hour model provided essential flexibility that allowed members to prioritize their health without conflicting with professional or personal responsibilities. Additionally, members who intentionally utilize off-peak hours to avoid overcrowding, maintain focus, or manage personal comfort are now facing limited and less effective workout opportunities.

This change disrupts established routines, reduces accessibility, and may ultimately impact member satisfaction and retention. We believe that restoring 24-hour access, or at minimum expanding current hours, would better align with the diverse needs of the membership base and reinforce Planet Fitness’s commitment to inclusivity and convenience.

Studies in exercise physiology consistently show that morning workouts are associated with stronger long-term adherence to fitness routines. People who exercise early in the day are less likely to skip sessions because fewer competing demands—such as work, family obligations, and unexpected schedule disruptions—interfere with their plans. This consistency is one of the most important predictors of achieving measurable health outcomes.

From a physiological standpoint, early exercise positively influences circadian rhythm regulation, which is closely tied to sleep quality and overall recovery. Research tied to circadian rhythm indicates that physical activity in the early morning can help stabilize sleep-wake cycles, particularly for individuals with irregular work hours. Improved sleep quality, in turn, is strongly linked to better cardiovascular health, metabolic function, and cognitive performance.

There is also evidence that exercising in the morning can enhance fat oxidation and metabolic efficiency. When workouts are performed in a fasted or semi-fasted state, the body is more likely to utilize stored fat as an energy source, which can support weight management goals. While total daily energy balance remains the dominant factor in weight loss, these metabolic differences can be meaningful for individuals trying to optimize results.

Behavioral research further shows that early exercisers report higher levels of mental clarity, reduced stress, and improved mood throughout the day. Physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters that support focus and emotional regulation, which can be especially valuable for individuals heading into demanding work environments. For shift workers and those in high-stress professions, early workouts often serve as a critical foundation for mental resilience.

From a public health perspective, accessibility to early workout hours is particularly important for populations working nontraditional schedules, including healthcare workers, transportation employees, and first responders. These groups often cannot reliably access fitness facilities during standard daytime or evening hours. Limiting access effectively reduces their ability to engage in consistent physical activity, which runs counter to widely accepted health guidelines recommending at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.

Taken together, the data supports a clear conclusion: early morning access is not simply a convenience, but a key factor in enabling consistency, improving physical and mental health outcomes, and ensuring equitable access for members with diverse schedules.

Planet Fitness is a chain that prides itself on being accessible to all fitness levels, emphasizing a no-judgment zone for everyone who walks through its doors. But how do they maintain that commitment if they restrict when members can use the facilities? Access to fitness shouldn't be limited to certain hours of the day. With people's varying schedules, a gym needs to accommodate everyone, including night owls, early risers, and those with unconventional work shifts.

We respectfully ask management to reconsider this decision and engage with members to find a solution that supports accessibility, consistency, and overall member experience.
