Reserved Seat Bill
Reserved Seat Bill
The Issue
Power Belongs to the People. But Where Are the Women?
Democracy is built on the promise that leadership belongs to all, yet for decades, Nigerian women have been shut out of decision-making. Women make up nearly 50% of Nigeria’s population but hold just 3.6% of National Assembly seats. Out of 36 states, only four have female deputy governors. In over 60 years of independence, Nigeria has never had a female governor.
This is not just a gap. It is a crisis.
The Opportunity Before Us: The Reserved Seats Bill
The Reserved Seats Bill (HB 1349), reintroduced in the 10th Assembly, is a historic step toward a fairer democracy. It proposes constitutional amendments that reserve additional seats for women in the National and State Assemblies. This is not about handouts; it is about creating a level playing field in a system that has historically excluded women.
When women are excluded from governance, policies fail to reflect the realities of half the population. It is time to change the narrative.
Nigeria Ranks 184th in the World for Women’s Political Representation
Other African countries have moved forward. Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, and Ethiopia have implemented gender quotas, and their economies and governance have thrived. Nigeria cannot afford to be last.
Your signature is a call for a Nigeria with equitable political representation.
