Reroute fuel trucks to protect salmon and wildlife in Olympic streams

Reroute fuel trucks to protect salmon and wildlife in Olympic streams
The Issue
On July 18, a tanker truck crashed near U.S. 101 and dumped thousands of gallons of fuel into Indian Creek—just upstream from the Elwha River, a sacred and ecologically vital waterway on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. The spill threatened salmon habitat, harmed aquatic life, and risked the drinking water of nearby communities.
This is more than a one-time accident. Indian Creek was part of a years-long, hard-fought restoration effort to bring wild salmon back after the removal of the Elwha dams. This is a place where river otters, eagles, and endangered fish make their home. Fuel trucks do not belong here.
We’re calling on Washington State and federal transportation agencies to immediately reroute hazardous fuel transport away from sensitive and protected wildlife corridors like Indian Creek and the Elwha River basin. These routes should be off-limits to tanker trucks—especially in regions with known tribal, ecological, and hydrological significance.
No more risking entire ecosystems for convenience. Let’s protect the animals that depend on these waters—and the people who do too.
Sign this petition to demand safer routes and real protections for the wildlife of Olympic Peninsula.
