Require Wilmington to Develop More Parks in Northeast
Require Wilmington to Develop More Parks in Northeast
The Issue
I am grateful to be able to call Wilmington, North Carolina my home. Staying active is not just a hobby, it’s a necessity for my well-being. However, as a resident of the northeastern part of Wilmington, our community is deprived of easy access to parks and recreational spaces. The situation is dire for those of us who rely on these areas for physical activity and communal gathering.
The current options are less than satisfactory. Airlie Gardens, although beautiful, is a county-owned attraction that requires an admission fee, putting a barrier on daily access for many residents. Meanwhile, the so-called Summer Rest Park is merely a trail; it falls short of fulfilling the recreational and leisure needs of our community. Despite paying our fair share of taxes, we find ourselves in a 'park desert,' with inadequate or leisurely spaces, unlike other parts of Wilmington.
Adding parks and greenspaces is not merely about beautification; it’s about fairness, equality, and enhancing quality of life. Parks are vital community hubs that promote health, well-being, and social interaction. They are essential for children to play, families to gather, and individuals to rejuvenate. Most importantly, they provide seniors a safe and accessible environment to remain active and engaged.
The Wilmington City Council must prioritize developing more parks in our neighborhood. Doing so would address longstanding neglect and give due respect to the needs of northeastern Wilmington’s residents.
Turning this vision into reality requires your support. Every signature brings us one step closer to driving change. We urge the Wilmington City Council to create accessible, free parks in the northeastern part of the city, ensuring equality in recreational spaces for all citizens.
Join us in advocating for greener spaces and a healthier community. Sign this petition today to help us achieve the recreational equity we rightfully deserve. Your support can lead to a transformative impact in our lives and community.
