Require the government to allow educational visas for Afghan women

Require the government to allow educational visas for Afghan women
The Issue
For the past three and a half years, I have been teaching two Afghan girls online, fostering their academic growth and supporting their dreams. Recently, I took a decisive step and became their guardian to secure their education and future. With the generous backing of an American charity, AGFAF, these determined girls were given an opportunity to attend a UK boarding school, a chance that came through on the 2nd of March 2026. Unfortunately, due to changes in visa regulations, this opportunity is now at risk, for other students.
The proposed changes in educational visa rules threaten to dismantle the educational future of thousands of Afghan women, not just the ones I am privileged to help. Education is not just a fundamental human right; it is a cornerstone for development and empowerment, especially for women in regions where traditional educational opportunities have been severely restricted.
The UK has a proud tradition of offering refuge and educational opportunities to those in need, especially women and girls from conflict zones like Afghanistan. These young Afghan women represent hope and resilience against adversity, and their education here speaks volumes about our broader role and responsibility as a society committed to global education equity and empowerment.
We urge the UK government to uphold its commitment to providing educational opportunities to Afghan women, by maintaining the policies which allow these students to complete their education in the UK. Overturning or significantly amending these policies not only affects the lives of these girls but can have lasting implications on international humanitarian educational commitments.
Allowing Afghan women to study in the UK means investing in a future generation of empowered, educated women who will potentially be leaders of change in their societies. It also reflects Britain’s stance as a leader in advocating for girls’ education worldwide. By maintaining favorable educational visa rules, the UK can provide an invaluable contribution to the global community and show solidarity with those fighting for their rights to education.
Please sign this petition to call on the UK government to keep educational visas available for Afghan women. Support their right to education and help ensure that these future leaders can achieve their dreams and contribute positively to our world.
