The Issue

This issue matters deeply to me because no victim of rape or sexual violence should be left terrified for their safety after reporting a crime. Survivors are too often failed by inadequate investigations, poor safeguarding, and systems that allow perpetrators back into society while victims continue to suffer fear, trauma, and intimidation. I believe urgent reform is needed to ensure victims are protected, believed, and treated with dignity throughout the justice process.

In recent years, too many survivors have shared their devastating stories of being let down by the very systems that are supposed to protect them. Reports show that victims are repeatedly disbelieved or blamed, and their cases are mishandled by the authorities. According to a report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services, 78% of rape investigations in some regions are closed without suspects being charged, leaving survivors feeling hopeless and invalidated.

Stricter bail laws are crucial. Presently, perpetrators of rape and sexual violence are often released on bail, returning to communities where they can continue to intimidate and victimize. This puts immense psychological pressure on victims, who live in constant fear of retaliatory violence. Changing these laws to make bail far more restrictive in such cases will help protect survivors from further harm.

Additionally, mandatory safeguarding measures need to be established for victims immediately after they report assaults. This includes providing emotional support, secure housing if necessary, and a legal advocate who can guide them through the complex and daunting judicial process.

Police accountability is another vital area for reform. Officers must be held responsible for negligent and mishandled investigations. This not only involves improving training and resources to ensure thorough and empathetic handling of cases but also implementing oversight mechanisms to review and rectify mistakes, ensuring that victims receive justice and perpetrators are held accountable.

Finally, legally enforceable protections must be put in place for survivors of sexual violence. These safeguards should guarantee their safety and well-being throughout the legal procedure and beyond, preventing contact with the accused and protecting them from threats and harassment.

Please sign this petition to advocate for these essential changes. Strengthening the rights and protections of victims of rape and sexual violence can transform their recovery journeys and help bring about a justice system that truly prioritizes their safety and dignity.
