Require St. Louis Public Libraries to allow installation of Windows program software
The Issue
When my computer broke down, I found myself without the essential tools I needed to continue my passion for game development. The libraries in St. Louis, which I often turned to as a resource, unfortunately did not offer access to the necessary software for creating and developing games. This is not just a problem for me but for many young developers who rely on public resources to pursue their dreams and build their skills.
In 2020-2021 this wasn't an issue but returning today there's.. problems.
In today's digital age, game development is more than just a hobby; it's a viable career path. Programs like Roblox Studio, Unity, and other essential software (.exe or .msi files) are pivotal for anyone looking to practice and enhance their coding and design skills. It's essential for our public spaces, like libraries, which are bastions of learning and creativity, to evolve alongside technology and provide access to these tools.
We understand that unrestricted access could lead to potential security and administrative challenges. However, by requiring administrator approval for installations, libraries can maintain a secure environment while also expanding their offerings. Similarly, other libraries across the country have implemented controlled-access solutions to successfully integrate these programs into their system.
By expanding the list of allowable software and ensuring that there is an administrator approved process in place, the St. Louis Public Libraries can establish themselves as innovative leaders in education and technology. This move not only aids those without personal access to high-performance computers but also supports the development of future tech entrepreneurs and game developers.
Libraries have always been about open access to knowledge and resources. Let's ensure they continue this mission by incorporating game development software into their available resources. Please sign this petition to help make game development programs accessible to everyone in our community at the St. Louis Public Libraries.
