Require propeller guards for boats in Port River Dolphin Sanctuary

Require propeller guards for boats in Port River Dolphin Sanctuary
The issue
I live in Port Adelaide and regularly see the dolphins in the Port River Dolphin Sanctuary. These dolphins are part of our community, and their deaths from propeller strikes are preventable. The recent loss of Rocket shows why action is needed now. Installing propeller guards is a simple step that can save lives and protect this unique sanctuary for future generations.
Every year, numerous dolphins and other marine life in the Port River Dolphin Sanctuary are injured or killed due to collisions with boat propellers. Propeller strikes contribute significantly to the decline in dolphin populations, not only disrupting the fragile marine ecosystem but also robbing our community of the joy brought by witnessing these magnificent creatures thriving in their natural habitat. The sanctuary is home to a unique population of bottlenose dolphins and is the only urban dolphin sanctuary of its kind in the world, underscoring the importance of stringent protective measures.
The installation of propeller guards on all boats entering the sanctuary is a practical, affordable, and effective measure to avert these tragedies. These low-cost devices can dramatically decrease the risk of injury or death to our beloved dolphins by preventing direct contact with the dangerous spinning blades. Countries such as Maldives have already implemented regulations requiring propeller guards in sensitive marine areas.
Given the sanctuary's status as a vital resource for both ecological balance and community well-being, it is imperative that we take immediate action. By mandating propeller guards on all motorised vessels entering the Port River Dolphin Sanctuary, we can ensure that this habitat remains a safe haven for dolphins and myriad other marine species.
Please join me in urging the South Australian government to enforce this critical measure. Sign this petition to protect our dolphins, preserve our environment, and uphold the legacy this sanctuary represents for generations to come.
