Require police to investigate all lines of enquiry

The Issue

I'm a victim of multiple accounts of rape at the hands of my ex partner. I endured being raped in my sleep multiple times.

Despite being arrested, the suspect provided no comment and refrained from completing a written statement- as well as threatening a witness and breaking bail on multiple occasions and  refusing to hand over his phone pin. He was also arrested on a separate occasion for coercive control, harassment and stalking in a separate matter with another woman.

Yet despite all this, my case was dropped by the police due to the discovery of "sexual messages" that I had sent to him during the course of the relationship, messages that were stretched to undermine my rape claims. The understanding being that the CPS would view evidence of any consensual sexual relations, as proof that rape could not have taken place. This is unacceptable.

It is a glaring flaw in the justice system when cases of assault are dismissed merely because of preconceived biases based on evidence deemed "undermining." Currently, the system neglects the multi-faceted dimensions of abusive relationships where continued contact or reconciliations with perpetrators are part of the cycle of control and manipulation.

Despite evidence that might initially seem to oppose the victim's claims, a thorough investigation of all possible lines of enquiry should be mandated. Every victim deserves that their case be treated with seriousness and integrity. This includes investigating all aspects and dimensions of cases regardless of preconceived notions or superficial evidence—especially in circumstances involving intimate partner assault and abuse.

Data shows that 43% of domestic abuse victims continue to maintain contact or remain with their abusers for varied complex reasons, as they are often trapped in cycles of dependency and fear. This underscores the necessity of training law enforcement to understand these dynamics and employ a holistic investigative approach.

By mandating comprehensive investigations, we remove bias and presumptions, ensuring that all victims, like myself, stand a fair chance at justice. This simple change can be a critical step towards restoring faith in the justice system for many who have been failed by it.

Join me in calling for a review and change in our policing policies to secure that all lines of inquiry are pursued diligently. Police officers must receive training on the complexities of intimate partner violence and exercise impartiality when handling such sensitive cases.

Sign this petition to demand justice and due process not just for me, but for all victims who deserve to have their voices heard and their cases taken seriously.
