Require Parklea and all correctional centres to allow alternative screening

Require Parklea and all correctional centres to allow alternative screening
The issue
Imagine preparing your young children for a much-awaited visit to see their father, only to be turned away at the gates because a machine erroneously flagged an abnormality. This is the distressing and unfair experience many families, including my own, are facing most commonly at Parklea Correctional Centre. The facility's intercept machine, intended to enhance safety, is instead causing unwarranted heartache, as it frequently shows false abnormalities, resulting in families being denied visits to their loved ones.
The technology, although modern, is not infallible. The families who experience these false positives often endure long hours of travel, emotional stress, and logistical challenges, only to be denied entry at the last minute. The real victims here are the children, who suffer confusion and heartbreak from not understanding why they can't see their parent. This undermines the vital family bonds that can greatly assist in the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners.
Parklea Correctional Centre and centres that facilitate the new intercept machine must introduce alternative screening methods or have a clear, fair appeal process for false flag incidents, ensuring that families, especially those with young children, are not unfairly penalized. Other correctional facilities facing similar issues have successfully implemented secondary screening measures and appeal protocols that balance security with family visitation rights.
Alternative solutions could include manual inspections, additional staff training, and appeals processes based on a comprehensive review rather than solely relying on intercept machine readings. By adopting these measures, Correctional Centres would not compromise on security but would enhance the dignity and emotional well-being of visiting families.
This call for action is not only about a single family or group of families; it's about fairness and compassion in an environment where stability and emotional connections are crucial. By signing this petition, you're urging Correctional Centres especially Parklea to review and amend their current practices, ensuring that families are treated with the respect and empathy they deserve. Stand with us to make necessary changes and uphold the fundamental right to family connection without the undue burden of inaccurate technology. Please sign this petition and help us drive much-needed change.
