The issue

My son walked into a hospital, desperate, claiming he was hearing voices and feeling suicidal. He was looking for help, for someone to save him from the torment he was experiencing. However, after waiting five long hours, during which they deemed him calm and collected, they simply handed him a contact number and sent him on his way. Two days later, torn apart by what he couldn’t escape, my son hung himself.

This tragic and preventable loss has driven me to speak out. Our hospitals and healthcare facilities are places where individuals in distress should find safety and care. Yet, the current system allows for personal judgments to dismiss expressed cries for help based on a superficial assessment of calm demeanor. This is a critical flaw. Nobody should have to suffer or lose their life because they seem 'okay' on the surface.

We propose a change: any individual who presents at a hospital with feelings, thoughts, or intentions of self-harm must be promptly evaluated by qualified mental health professionals. Regardless of appearances or initial impressions, these individuals need thorough assessments to determine their true mental health state. This approach is essential in distinguishing between those who might be seeking attention through their anguish and those who are genuinely on the brink and need immediate intervention.

We cannot afford to leave such a crucial determination to the subjective judgment of non-specialists under time pressures or preconceived notions. Implementing mandatory evaluations will ensure those needing urgent mental health care receive it before it’s too late.

Statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health reveal that suicide is a leading cause of death, reflecting a major public health concern demanding immediate action. Timely and appropriate mental health interventions are proven to prevent many of these deaths.

This is more than a personal crusade—it is a call to action to safeguard others from experiencing similar agony. We must end the neglect and save lives with systematic changes in our healthcare approach to mental health crises. Please lend your support to enforce mandatory evaluations for any expressed threats or indications of self-harm.
