The issue

Of the 15 faculties and schools across the entirety of the University of Melbourne, Melbourne Law School is the only faculty without an accessible Diversity and Inclusion Policy.

Urge MLS to include diverse voices, improve our faculty’s credibility and contribute towards a truly inclusive academic community at the University of Melbourne by adopting the following measures immediately:

  1. Form a MLS Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee based on a MLS Diversity and Inclusion Charter, made up and drafted by students and staff. The Charter should detail the strategy and aims of the faculty to begin to improve Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.
  2. Develop with the Steering Committee, a Diversity and Inclusion Five-Year Strategy and an annual Diversity and Inclusion Report.
  3. As part of the report, immediately engage a review of the status of Diversity and Inclusion across the entire faculty, including whether the faculty has met the minimum requirements of Equal Opportunities and Disability Support, and if not, document and action what steps are required for the faculty to meet its statutory obligations as an education provider.
  4. Develop with the Steering Committee an Action Plan, updated annually, to address any and all forms of discrimination at the faculty.
  5. Ensure the members of the Steering Committee, the Charter, the Strategy, the Report, and the Action Plan, are all made available online.

By advocating for this initiative, we are not just aligning ourselves with the university's broader goals but also taking a vital step towards enriching our community by welcoming and empowering diverse voices. Implementing these changes will enhance the faculty's ability to nurture future leaders who understand and cherish the importance of diversity.
