My husband has been in jail for 10 months, waiting on a bed in prison so he can serve his sentence. This waiting period is not being counted towards his prison term. Hundreds, if not thousands, of inmates across the United States are faced with this very issue every year.
Research shows that on any given day, local jails are holding people "waiting" for a bed in prison, contributing to national overcrowding statistics. This practice exacerbates already strained jail resources and imposes additional financial burdens on state budgets. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, over 600,000 people are released from state or federal prisons each year. Many of these individuals have spent extended periods waiting in jail, without those days being recognized as time served.
Practically, the solution is clear and feasible.
