The Issue

As a student, I am advocating for every high school to implement mandatory financial literacy education. Growing up, I saw how many people around me struggled with finances, entering adulthood without the skills to manage their money effectively. Financial literacy is not just about understanding how money works; it's about empowering students with essential skills like budgeting, saving, managing credit, paying taxes, and making informed decisions about their financial futures.

The lack of financial literacy education in schools is a disservice to students and society as a whole. According to a study by the National Financial Educators Council, average respondents estimate they lost $1,389 in 2020 due to lack of personal finance knowledge. This is a sobering statistic that highlights the urgent need for change in our education system. High school students should graduate with the tools they need to succeed in real-world financial situations.

Currently, too many students are entering college and the workforce without the ability to manage their finances properly. This can lead to increased debt, poor credit scores, and a cycle of financial mismanagement that could easily be avoided with the right education. By making personal finance coursework a graduation requirement, schools can play a pivotal role in preparing students for successful lives post-graduation.

Implementing financial literacy classes will not only benefit students, but also society in the long term. Well-informed future adults are more likely to lead healthier financial lives, contributing positively to the economy and reducing the burden of financial crises.

I urge educational policymakers and school boards to take immediate action and introduce financial literacy as a mandatory part of the high school curriculum. It's time we prioritize financial education, so no student leaves school without the necessary tools to lead a financially secure life.

Please sign this petition to make financial literacy education a requirement for all high school students. Together, we can foster a generation that is financially informed and ready for the future.
