The Issue

Our beloved cat, Panda, had to be euthanized due to a lack of funds, even though emergency procedures that could have saved his life were available. The emergency room veterinarians required an upfront payment of over $2,000 for these procedures, a cost we simply couldn't afford. However, they waived the fee for euthanasia, a heartbreaking decision we had no choice but to make. No pet owner should have to make such a devastating decision because they cannot afford lifesaving veterinary care in an emergency.

Pets are beloved family members, providing unconditional love and comfort. When our pets face life-threatening emergencies, they deserve the same urgent care considerations as humans. Unfortunately, many pet owners across the nation face the same tragic situation we did: forced to choose between enormous financial burdens or the lives of their cherished animals.

While veterinary care is understandably costly, emergency situations necessitate a different standard. We are calling upon legislators to mandate that emergency room veterinarians treat pets in life-threatening conditions, regardless of the owner's ability to pay at the time.

A potential solution involves establishing a fund or financial aid program, supported by government and private contributions, enabling vets to provide essential care without immediate financial transactions. Such programs could mirror patient assistance programs in human medical care, ensuring veterinarians aren't carrying the financial burden entirely.

Other industries have funds or donor-supported initiatives that help cover costs when life is at stake; similar programs should exist for pets in emergencies. We urge lawmakers, animal welfare organizations, and veterinary associations to collaborate on creating mechanisms that remove financial barriers to emergency care for pets.

Pets enrich our lives in countless ways, and it's our responsibility to ensure they can receive lifesaving care when they need it most, regardless of financial constraints. Please join us in advocating for mandatory emergency care for pets, and help save countless lives like Panda's by signing this petition.
