The Issue

Drink spiking is happening more often than people realize, and in most cases, victims don’t even know what happened until it’s too late.

Across Florida, reports and personal accounts shared online point to a concerning increase in these incidents. I am personally a victim of being drugged and assaulted, and after looking into this issue, it’s clear this is not isolated; it’s happening across Florida and throughout the country.

When someone’s drink is spiked, it leaves them vulnerable to assault, injury, or theft. Many cases go unreported due to confusion, memory loss, or a lack of clear evidence, as these drugs leave your system in just a few hours.

But there is a simple way to help prevent this.

California has already taken action. Under Assembly Bill 1013, bars and nightclubs are required to offer drink-testing devices and inform patrons that they are available for free or at a low cost. This is a practical, low-cost solution that gives people a way to protect themselves in real time.

Florida has the opportunity to do the same.

No one should have to worry about being drugged while going out for a drink or even just a meal.

  • What we’re asking for: Require testing devices to be available at all licensed establishments, including bars, nightclubs, and restaurants. They should provide drink-spiking detection tools such as test strips, stickers, or straws, available to any patron who wishes to test their drink for free or at a low cost.

  • Clear safety signage: Establishments should display clear signage that informs patrons that testing tools are available upon request.

  • Safe and proper use: All devices should be properly stored, within expiration dates, and used according to manufacturer guidelines.

  • Reasonable protections for businesses: Businesses acting in good faith to provide these tools should not be held liable for false positives or false negatives.

  • Practical implementation: This can be incorporated into Florida’s existing alcohol licensing system with reasonable timelines for compliance.

  • Why This Matters: Drink spiking is widely underreported and difficult to prove after the fact.

Prevention tools are inexpensive, accessible, and easy to implement.
Visible safety measures can deter harmful behavior before it occurs.

This petition calls for a safer, more accountable environment in Florida.

Because no one should feel unsafe and afraid of being sexually assaulted or robbed while supporting Florida restaurants and bars.

We urge Florida lawmakers to take action on this urgent public safety issue.
