Require councils to mandate transparency in planning applications

Require councils to mandate transparency in planning applications
The Issue
I live in a small village in the UK that's been affected by irresponsible building companies. Time and again, we've watched as companies with poor track records navigate through loopholes, leaving trails of devastation, ill health, and unresolved financial obligations. I am not alone in this experience; countless individuals across the UK are facing similar hardships, with companies evading responsibility by merely changing names or declaring bankruptcy, only to resurface under a new guise. Although this may be a requirement to declare in applications, some council are not considering the wider implication and allowing applications to proceed.
It is high time we address this systemic issue that affects so many lives. We need councils to hold builders accountable by ensuring transparency and integrity in their operations. We propose that all planning applications from building companies—big or small—include not only mandatory declaration of any previous prosecutions related to building, planning, environmental, or health and safety breaches, but a rigorous approach and accountability to prevent these applications moving forward. This requirement should not only extend to any changes in the company’s name as recorded by Companies House, and any history of bankruptcy that has formerly permitted them to escape accountability and restart under different aliases, but to ensure victims of their misconduct should be compensated under their new company name.
Areas within applications where it is manditory to disclose and have been, there should be extended scutiny regarding any monetary trail where members of public or linked companies have come to harm.
Transparency is a crucial aspect for safeguarding our communities and ensuring that building companies operate ethically. By implementing these changes, we can prevent companies with a history of misconduct from causing further harm.
We urge the local councils across the UK to take a resolute stand and legislate for this necessary transparency in the planning application process. Accountability is a critical measure in protecting communities throughout the nation.
Please join me in this movement to demand better standards and accountability from builders. Sign this petition to voice the need for councils to enforce transparency requirements in planning applications, securing a healthier, more ethical environment for us all.
