The Issue

The beloved South Philly Carnival has been a cherished tradition for many years, offering a wide variety of rides, games, and entertainment. However, it has recently come to our attention that its operation is often sanctioned without adequately considering the community's input. The residents of South Philadelphia deserve a voice in this decision-making process given the profound impact that this event has on the neighborhood's daily life.

Firstly, the carnival attracts large crowds, which inevitably increases noise levels, traffic congestion, and strain on local resources. Additionally, these events usually bring heightened concerns regarding safety, cleanliness, and security. It's not just about having fun; these issues deeply influence the residents' quality of life.

Moreover, embracing community consultation aligns with democratic principles, ensuring transparency and accountability. Allowing the community to have a say in such events would not only lead to better organized and more anticipated carnivals, but it would also foster a sense of community ownership and pride.

To achieve this, we propose the establishment of a Community Approval Council, comprising residents, local business owners, and city officials. The council would be responsible for assessing and approving event proposals based on their potential impact on the area, as well as crafting strategies to mitigate any negative effects.

We urge the Philadelphia City Council to consider this proposal and amend the current ordinance concerning event permits, making community feedback a mandatory step in the permit approval process. This change would ensure that the voices of South Philly residents are heard and respected, ultimately leading to a more harmonious environment for both the carnival attendees and local inhabitants.

Join us in advocating for a more democratic approach to event permitting by signing this petition. Your support can make a difference in ensuring that South Philadelphia's festivities reflect the community's needs and values.
