Require Clear Suicide Method Warnings on Television and Streaming Programs
The Issue
I am speaking today in support of a simple but important change to television content warnings: programs should clearly announce before each episode when suicide is depicted, and they should specify the method shown.
Many broadcasters already provide general warnings for themes such as violence, strong language, or suicide. However, these warnings are often too vague to help viewers make informed decisions about what they are about to watch.
For many people, certain depictions of suicide can be deeply distressing. Individuals who have lost loved ones, experienced trauma, struggled with mental health challenges, or witnessed such events may find particular methods especially triggering. A general warning that an episode contains “suicide themes” does not provide enough information for viewers to protect themselves from unexpected exposure to content they may find traumatic.
For example, scenes involving hanging can be particularly upsetting for some viewers. Someone may feel comfortable watching a program that discusses suicide but may not be prepared for a visual depiction of a specific method. Without clear information, viewers can be caught off guard by scenes that cause significant emotional distress.
This petition is not about censorship. It is not about preventing writers, filmmakers, or broadcasters from telling important stories. Rather, it is about giving audiences the information they need to make informed choices about their own wellbeing.
Television providers already have systems in place for content advisories. Expanding these warnings to include specific information about suicide depictions would require only a small change, yet it could make a meaningful difference to many viewers.
We routinely provide detailed warnings for flashing lights because they can affect people with photosensitive epilepsy. We should show the same consideration for people who may be affected by traumatic content. Clear, specific warnings empower viewers to decide whether they wish to continue watching, prepare themselves emotionally, or skip certain scenes.
I urge broadcasters, streaming services, and regulators to adopt a policy requiring that episodes containing depictions of suicide clearly state this before the program begins and identify the method depicted where appropriate.
This is a practical, compassionate measure that respects both artistic freedom and audience wellbeing.
Thank you for your support.
