Require chocolate products to label caffeine and theobromine content

The Issue

Like many who care for children and adults with conditions or have conditions, we are constantly careful with diets to ensure it doesn’t exacerbate symptoms. One thing many people don't realize is that chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine. This oversight can be particularly concerning for parents, guardians, ourselves, and caregivers who unknowingly give children or adults caffeine-laden foods/ theobromine, further complicating conditions like ADHD or other health conditions. Or just simply contributing to hyperactivity. Current food labeling requirements do not mandate the disclosure of caffeine or theobromine content in products that naturally contain it, such as chocolate. This lack of transparency places individuals at risk who are sensitive to caffeine's effects/ theobromine or who are managing health conditions like ADHD or other health conditions. By not having this crucial piece of information, parents and individuals are unable to make fully informed dietary choices. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), caffeine is a stimulant that can cause nervousness, increased heart rate, and insomnia. For children, especially those with ADHD, the intake of caffeine can lead to increased hyperactivity and inattentiveness, directly impacting their behavior and ability to focus. Additionally, caffeine sensitivity varies greatly; while some individuals may tolerate it well, others, particularly children, might experience significant adverse effects with even small amounts. Requiring chocolate manufacturers to disclose caffeine and theobromine content on their packaging is a simple yet vital change that can have significant positive impacts on public health and safety. This will not only protect children but also adults who either wish to monitor or limit their caffeine and theobromine intake for various health reasons, including pregnancy, heart conditions, or other sensitivities. We are calling on the FDA to revise its labeling requirements to include mandatory reporting of caffeine and theobromine content for products containing chocolate. This will ensure that everyone has the information they need to make safer, more informed dietary choices. Please sign this petition to urge the FDA to protect consumers by enforcing chocolate products to label their caffeine and theobromine content. Together, we can help prevent unnecessary health complications and ensure a healthier future for everyone.
