Require all stations in London to be wheelchair accessible by 2030
The Issue
For the past 13 years, I have dedicated my life to helping families as a nanny, navigating through the busy streets and stations of London with prams and assisting people of various ages. Despite my best efforts, I have repeatedly encountered an unfortunate reality: our city's infrastructure is inadequate for individuals who need accessibility to move freely. Watching people in wheelchairs struggle to reach their destinations in what should be the epitome of modern urban living is heart-wrenching. Access to transportation is a basic human right, and it's time we address this pressing issue.
Currently, many of London’s stations fall short of providing wheelchair accessibility, isolating individuals and hindering their independence. According to Transport for London's (TfL) data, only 80 out of 270 Tube stations are fully accessible. This is a grim reflection of how much work still needs to be done to ensure every resident, regardless of physical ability, can navigate the city with ease.
To create an inclusive and equitable environment, we must make all stations wheelchair accessible by 2030. This is a realistic timeframe, allowing enough time to refit existing structures with ramps, elevators, and other essential accessibility features.
The benefits extend beyond the disabled community. Improved accessibility makes travel more convenient for parents with prams, seniors, and those with temporary mobility issues. Furthermore, this commitment to inclusivity enhances London's reputation as a progressive, world-class city.
We urge the London government and TfL to prioritize this initiative and allocate the necessary resources and funding to ensure comprehensive accessibility across all stations. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a city where everyone can move freely, comfortably, and independently.
Please join me in calling for a fundamental change to ensure mobility and accessibility for all. Sign this petition to make London’s transport system truly inclusive by 2030.
