Require all high schools in San Diego to offer home economics classes

The Issue

Many of my peers and younger students struggle with essential life skills once they graduate high school. Whether it's managing personal finances, cooking nutritious meals, or understanding basic sewing and household repairs, these skills are crucial for successful adult life. Yet, many students leave high school without any formal education in these areas. This gap in education leaves them ill-prepared for independence and adulthood.

In the past, home economics classes were a standard part of high school curriculums, providing students with practical knowledge and skills they would use in everyday life. Unfortunately, many schools in San Diego and across the United States have phased out these programs, prioritizing other subjects at the expense of practical life skills.

By requiring all high schools in San Diego, CA to reintroduce home economics classes, we can ensure that students are better prepared for life beyond school. These classes provide opportunities to learn budgeting, nutrition, cooking, textiles, and home management—all essential skills that benefit individuals and families alike.

Statistically, teaching life skills such as financial literacy and nutrition to teenagers has been shown to significantly improve their decision-making abilities and quality of life. According to a study by the National Endowment for Financial Education, financially literate individuals are more likely to have higher savings rates and lower debt levels, leading to a more stable and prosperous future.

By signing this petition, you support the call to action for the San Diego School District to prioritize the futures of their students. Together, we can advocate for a more holistic education that prepares students not just academically but for all aspects of life. Let's come together to demand that every high school in San Diego offer comprehensive home economics education.

Sign this petition to prepare our youth for a successful and independent future.
