I have created this petition in hopes to protect minors from Not Suitable For Work (NSFW) material on social media sites, while also respecting the agency of adults who would like the option to use social media platforms without having to provide their ID just to use them. This petition is a compromise, asking that social media only requires ID age verification if they wish to show NSFW material on the platform. I understand that no filter is perfect, and it is not always easy for a platform to distinguish the difference between every post of, for example, art and anatomy versus sexualized media, but I ask that if material is considered NSFW, that it would require this ID verification. 

NSFW may include: non-informational nudity (not clearly depicting non-sexualized art or anatomy), sexual acts, what a platform may deem as sexualized imagery of a person, as well as violent content that may include real violent human death (in a non-educational setting) or extreme injury and blood.

The U.S. House of Representatives has just recently passed a bill, in June of 2026, called the KIDS Act. This bill has been passed with the goal of protecting minors by banning targeted advertising to teens, disabling addictive features like infinite scrolling, requiring platforms to default to their highest privacy settings, and restricting all access to NSFW material.

Currently, the U.S. versions of sites such as Reddit and X rely mostly on the "honor system"—a pop-up asking if you are 18, which any child can click past. This new bill would pressure social media sites to require age verification for ALL users of their platform, just to protect minors from seeing mature content. In contrast to this, after the implementation of the UK’s Online Safety Act, Reddit has already started forcing strict ID age verification only for users trying to access NSFW subreddits or 18+ profiles. UK users have to upload a government ID or take a biometric facial-estimation selfie via a third-party system (Persona) just to view mature communities. A gap must be bridged in the U.S. where we require age verification, only to view NSFW material, where users who do not intend to view this type of content do not feel like they are being monitored just simply using social media.

For context as to why I believe we need to take action immediately to protect minors from content that they are not mature enough to understand the full consequences of,  I'd like to share my story:

By the age of 14, I was constantly exposed to pornographic and sexualized media on social media platforms. Influenced by what I was seeing, I believed my peers were the only ones engaging with this content, ignorant of the fact that it was accessible worldwide and that what I saw and posted could be seen by anyone. Before turning 18, I had friends who were posting nude photos online, and I was overwhelmed by the idea that my value, especially as a woman, was judged purely on sex appeal. This led to a distorted view of myself, seeing my worth through the lens of sexuality, a narrative frequently perpetuated by social media platforms, particularly towards women. Across social media channels, I was flooded with borderline inappropriate content: sexual images of young women, seductive poses, conversations about BDSM; all of which felt normal until maturity and awareness brought me clarity to the damaging effects of this exposure. It became apparent that I, like many others, had been exploited, and that these platforms played a significant role in shaping an unhealthy self-perception and understanding of human relationships and sexuality. It affected how I viewed relationships, led me to believe that a guy who was, in the end, only interested in sex, was someone who valued me as a person. That my only appeal in a relationship was my sexual appeal, and that if I changed physically somehow, I would never deserve love again. 

This experience is not unique to me.

With the pervasive nature of current social media, countless young individuals are exposed prematurely to sexual content without truly understanding the consequences or the widespread visibility of their actions online. Countless young women, just hitting the start of their adult lives, have been led to feel pressured into posting sexualized content of themselves on social media or more graphic sites, due to social media pressure. 

Here are a few facts about how NSFW content on social media impacts minors, even after they become adults:

• The threat to minors extends far beyond dedicated adult websites; mainstream social media platforms have become an unregulated pipeline of highly sexualized, "grey area" content. Because platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and TikTok permit varying degrees of NSFW material, nudity, and suggestive media, their algorithms serve this content to users of all ages. According to data from the Bark Annual Report, a staggering 58% of tweens (ages 8–12) and 75% of teens (ages 13–18) routinely encounter content of a sexual nature or nudity on the apps they use daily. Also, a national survey by ParentsTogether Action reveals that exposure to sexually inappropriate content on social media peaks dramatically for children between the ages of 11 and 12, with exposure rates doubling for youth who use these platforms multiple times a day. By failing to enforce strict Age ID Verification, social media corporations are actively allowing automated algorithms to feed highly sexualized material to millions of unverified children every single day.
• The absence of strict age barriers on social media has created an environment where minors face immense pressure to produce and share sexualized content. A landmark study published in JAMA Network Open surveyed over 6,200 young adults regarding their experiences as minors and found that 90% of those who received a coercive request for a sexual photo were young women, and more than half ultimately complied. This dangerous normalization begins incredibly early; tracking data from the digital safety group Internet Matters reveals that a child's likelihood of sending an explicit image more than doubles between the ages of 14 and 15, with 23% of older teens explicitly stating they were pressured or blackmailed into sending them. By leaving social media platforms unregulated, algorithms and peer networks are actively pushing underage girls into a harmful cycle of self-objectification and digital exploitation. 
• Mainstream social media sites have fundamentally altered the cultural landscape, transforming commercial adult content from a dangerous taboo into a heavily marketed "career option" for young women just crossing the threshold of adulthood. According to a recent academic study published in the International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science, an astonishing 93% of university students are intimately familiar with OnlyFans, and 50% personally know someone who produces content on the platform. This extreme social media saturation places an unprecedented socio-cultural pressure on young women to view the monetization of their bodies as normal and expected. Driven by algorithmic "thirst traps" and the deceptive illusion of easy digital wealth, young women are being actively funneled off standard social feeds and into predatory adult spaces that thrive on their immediate consumption and rapid disposal. 
• The digital adult entertainment industry operates on a predatory model that deliberately targets women of the most vulnerable demographic, between the ages of 18 to 24, only to consume and discard them almost immediately. According to the Gitnux Human Resources in the Adult Industry Report, young women in this age range make up a staggering 60% of the active performer pool. Jon Millward’s landmark study, Deep Inside: A Study of 10,000 Porn Stars and Their Careers, establishes that the average age of entry for a female performer is just 22 years old, meaning a massive portion of the workforce consists of young women entering a field where "teen" is documented as the single most heavily searched category. Despite driving the highest traffic, these young women are subjected to a brutal system of hyper-turnover; Millward's data reveals that the average career of a female performer lasts less than six months, with up to 30% of women exiting permanently after filming just a single video. This pattern of swift exploitation has seamlessly transitioned to modern subscription platforms like OnlyFans, where the Gitnux Content Creator Market Report indicates that 35% of creators go dark or delete their accounts within their first six months. These metrics reveal a stark reality: a revolving door that treats the bodies of very young women not as sustainable workers, but as short-term, highly disposable commodities.

Because of the staggering amount of minors being led down this path of hyper-sexualized media, where many end up sexualizing themselves and being exploited by Social Media and the Pornography Industry—before even being fully aware of the consequences and their digital footprint—I petition this two-part solution:

Implementing a Content-Gated Mandate

We are not calling for the end of internet anonymity, nor are we demanding that social media platforms verify the identity of every single user at signup. Instead, we demand a strict, commonsense "Verify or Purge" mandate targeting adult content specifically:

• Age Verification Only for Adult Features: Social media platforms may remain fully accessible and anonymous for general use. However, a secure, third-party Age ID Verification check must be mandatory before a user can unlock, view, or interact with any NSFW pages, such as a subreddit or forum, adult spaces, or 18+ profiles, or
• The Clean Default (The Purge): If a social media corporation objects to implementing content-level age gating due to costs or user privacy concerns, they must immediately and completely remove all NSFW, explicit, and sexually suggestive material from their platform entirely.
  This content-gated model (which platforms like Reddit have already successfully deployed internationally) fully protects adult privacy on these platforms while creating an ironclad barrier that stops minors from stumbling into explicit content.

Secure age verification can be achieved without compromising user privacy, through a system known as zero-retention third-party age assurance. Under this model, users never upload sensitive documents or facial scans directly to a social media platform. Instead, the check is handled by an independent, encrypted verification service (such as Yoti or Persona). This third-party verifier securely scans the ID or performs a privacy-protective facial age estimation, confirms the user is over 18, and passes a single, encrypted "Yes" or "No" digital token back to the social media site. The social media platform never receives the user's name, ID, or biometric data, and the third-party verifier is legally mandated to instantly delete and discard all identification files the moment the check is complete. It functions exactly like a digital bouncer who looks at an ID, immediately forgets the person's identity, and simply tells the venue that they are legally allowed inside. 

I also propose a strong suggestion to teach Media Literacy and  in school classrooms to equip youth with an understanding of (varying depending on age group): 

• how social media algorithms operate,
• differentiating between real and scripted/fake content,
• the intention behind social media and pornography sites, which is to make money from their users,
• porn addiction,
• how to be aware of the discriminatory and inaccurate scripts utilized by adult content regarding bodies, sex, and relationships,
• the harms of social media overuse (mental health and dopamine addictions),
• cyber bullying, and
• real-world values of equality, safety, mutual desire, and active consent,

As well as aiming to:

• Dismantle harmful gender stereotypes by deconstructing harmful cultural myths that damage healthy development, specifically refuting the harmful stereotypes that women do not possess authentic sexual desire, or conversely, that men are driven solely by an insatiable urge for sex,
• Promote sexual equality and mutual respect, by shifting the narrative away from the dominant, submissive, and degrading dynamics popularized by adult media, and replacing them with a foundational understanding of egalitarian relationships rooted in absolute equality, dignity, and active, mutual consent, and
• Understand the blueprint of desire, by educating youth on the genuine, healthy, and multifaceted "blueprint of desire". Including the emotional, developmental, and physiological differences between boys and girls, so they can understand their own bodies and boundaries rather than relying on highly distorted digital scripts, or no education at all

These actions are crucial in protecting minors from exposure to material that could potentially distort their understanding of sexuality, relationships, and self-worth. This could considerably mitigate the risk of minors being exposed to harmful material, as it would limit the chances of accessing such content until users are at an appropriate age. While we have parental controls, they are not foolproof, and young people often find ways around them, making an official age verification system on these platforms essential. 

It is time we hold these tech giants accountable for the wellbeing of young individuals in our society, ensuring social media is a safe environment for all users.
