The Issue

I have been turned down on three occasions now when seeking a new home that accommodates my specific needs as a disabled individual. Despite being interested in newly built houses by various housing associations, I repeatedly face setbacks simply because these associations can not make necessary adaptations to these properties. This ongoing experience feels like discrimination, and I'm certainly not alone in this struggle. Many of us in the disabled community are stuck in unsuitable living conditions, because the basic human right to a livable and accessible home is repeatedly ignored.

Currently, hundreds of new houses are being constructed across the UK. Yet, shockingly, none of these are automatically made available with the essential modifications that disabled people require. This glaring oversight paints a picture of indifference towards a significant segment of the population. It’s time to change this narrative.

The solution is clear and achievable: Require all building companies that sell to housing associations to provide the option of adapting homes to be accessible for disabled buyers or occupants. Simple structural changes, like wider doorways, ramps, lower kitchen surfaces, and accessible bathrooms, can transform a house into a home for someone with disabilities. These adaptations not only enhance quality of life but can also significantly boost the confidence and independence of disabled individuals.

The Equality Act 2010 was designed to prevent discrimination and promote equality. However, when housing is not inclusive, we fall short of meeting its objectives. The absence of adaptive housing options is indirectly forcing disabled individuals into a cycle of seeking expensive temporary solutions or settling for inadequate accommodations, which should not be the norm.

We urge policymakers, building companies, and housing associations to work together in creating an actionable plan that ensures new properties are disability-friendly. This can be done by implementing incentives for building companies to offer adaptable housing solutions and by enforcing regulations that mandate inclusive housing designs.

Please, lend your support to this vital cause. Signing this petition will propel us one step closer to securing a future where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can access a home that meets their needs. Let us champion a society that values inclusivity, one where people do not have to fight for their right to live in a space that serves them well. Your signature can help drive this critical change.
