The Issue
As an Honours student at the University of South Africa (UNISA), I am writing to express serious concerns regarding the recent examination marking for PYC4805. Alongside many peers, I have meticulously prepared for this exam, only to receive results that seem inconsistent and do not reflect the effort and understanding I have demonstrated throughout my studies. We sincerely believe the marking was not only unfair but also inaccurate, leading to immense stress and potentially impacting our academic futures.
The examination for PYC4805 is a pivotal component of our Honours degree in Psychology, and its accurate marking is essential in maintaining the standards of UNISA as a prestigious institution. The discrepancies observed in the results have been unusually high, prompting doubts and dissatisfaction among us students. Many of us have compared notes and communicated our disappointment, showcasing that the issue is not isolated but widespread.
Exam integrity is crucial, and we urge the UNISA administration to take decisive action by conducting a comprehensive audit and review of the examination papers for PYC4805. This is not only for the fairness of our current academic standing but also to preserve the credibility and reputation of UNISA's academic evaluations.
According to the Transparency International's Global Corruption Barometer, education sectors maintain integrity by ensuring transparency and fairness in examination processes. UNISA’s leadership in higher education can only be strengthened by upholding these principles and demonstrating accountability in its examination processes.
We further suggest that UNISA establish a mechanism for a transparent and independent review process for exam disputes, involving external educators who can provide an unbiased evaluation. This proactive step can ensure higher confidence in the examination results and uphold the principles of fairness and justice for all students.
We are not asking for favoritism but for a fair reassessment of our work. By signing this petition, you support the call for transparency and fairness at UNISA, ensuring that every student's hard work and dedication are accurately reflected in their results. Please lend your voice to this cause and help us make a change for the betterment of current and future students at UNISA.
