Request to stop the new ILR 10-year rule for existing skilled worker visa holders

Request to stop the new ILR 10-year rule for existing skilled worker visa holders
The Issue
We, the existing Skilled Worker visa holders in the United Kingdom, respectfully request our Member of Parliament to raise concerns with the Home Office regarding the proposed changes to the ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) rules.
Many of us moved to the UK with the clear understanding that we would become eligible for ILR after 5 years, based on the immigration rules announced and applicable at the time of our arrival. We planned our careers, family lives, finances, and long-term stability around this pathway.
However, the proposed increase of the ILR residency requirement from 5 years to 10 years, combined with higher salary thresholds, will severely impact thousands of law-abiding, tax-paying residents who are already contributing to the UK economy.
Why this change is harmful:
It destabilizes the lives of existing visa holders who entered the UK under a different promise.
It restricts job mobility — many of us cannot change employers because our salaries do not meet the new thresholds, creating a situation where we have limited freedom and career growth.
It creates severe financial pressure, impacting our ability to support families, pay mortgages, and plan for the future.
It affects mental wellbeing, as many feel trapped, anxious, and uncertain about their long-term stability in the UK.
We contribute significantly to the economy through taxes and do not rely on public benefits.
The English-language requirement for dependents is understandable, but linking high salary thresholds to visa eligibility will push many families into distress.
Our Request:
respectfully ask Members of Parliament to advocate on our behalf, ensuring that existing Skilled Worker visa holders remain under the current five-year ILR path, as initially promised. Any new rules should apply prospectively to new arrivals post-legislation, not retroactively, to maintain fairness and uphold the trust we placed in the UK's immigration system.
These changes, if applied to existing residents, will negatively impact thousands of skilled professionals who came to the UK in good faith, contribute to society, and wish to integrate and build stable lives here.
We request your support in ensuring fairness, stability, and humane treatment for all existing Skilled Worker visa holders.
Sign this petition to help protect the rights and futures of skilled workers who chose the UK as their home with trust in their path to stability. Your support can make a real difference in ensuring that fairness and humane treatment prevail in the UK's immigration policies.
