It is an easy narrative to suggest that all those opposed to the new music are ‘haters’ and just resistant to change.

However, the truth is, we are fighting to save the music we love, that moves our bodies and lifts our spirits. We are not complaining for the sake of it, honestly we have better things to do! We just feel passionately that we want the experience we so cherished back. We want our classes to be exhilarating again and Virgin Active to be the place that we all look forward to visiting.

We are not saying that there is no role for royalty free music, indeed some of us use it ourselves for videos and as background tracks. What we are saying, is that it’s not suitable for exercise to music. It doesn’t energise and motivate us the same way. It’s harder to pace and push ourselves and it’s not as fun.

Dance, aqua and cycle are not just done to keep fit, but for the pure pleasure and joy they bring to body and mind. The best exercise is always going to be the one you love, the one you can’t wait to do again.

Think about dance, what tracks make you run to the dance floor at a club, festival or wedding? Is it the one you know and love, or an emerging artist you haven’t heard before? It’s why they always play some of the old stuff at gigs. We know everything old was once new, and this music has a place, it’s just not in our gyms.

Virgin we have tried the new music and it’s not working for us, listen to your customers, you can turn this around and we will love you all the more for it!
