Request Member Consultation on Virgin Active's Transition to Royalty-Free Music

The Issue

Virgin Active, a renowned health club chain, has recently decided to shift its music policy to exclusively royalty-free music. This decision was made without consulting the members who regularly use their facilities and enjoy the current music offering on the gym floor and in classes.

We believe that as paying members of Virgin Active health clubs, our opinions should be considered in decisions that directly affect our gym experience. Therefore, we urge Virgin Active management to conduct a member consultation on this new policy of royalty-free music.

Virgin plans to move to Epidemic Sound if you wish to hear the new music which is currently being trialled in classes and will be enforced in April.

Reason for the Request

Numerous studies have found that working out to music is an effective way to ensure that exercise becomes an enjoyable, sustainable habit, improving the health of the body and mind. Studies also show that music can help improve the quality of exercise by elevating mood, increasing endurance and actually reducing physical feelings of pain and fatigue. Who hasn’t been flagging in an activity to feel instantly re-invigorated when a track they love comes on?

Music reduces perceived effort and evidence suggests, can even promote metabolic efficiency. Listening to music they love, people run farther, bike longer and swim faster, often without realising - because they are enjoying themselves.

Virgin instructors spend time designing individual classes and choregraphing workouts, blending them with appropriate music and timing all the elements to the tracks. For instance, using changes in tempo, rhythm, and intensity to seamlessly adjust a cycling workout. Thus, the music is what motivates the movement and creates the group energy. At present instructors add their own specific flavour and style to classes and many members and do not wish to move to a uniform brand of pre-specified playlist in which the instructor has no specific interest or passion. Group exercise is a shared activity, powered by skilled instructors sharing their enthusiasm and passion which in turn motivates class attendees.
