Request for installation of Enhanced Seismometer Network Systems in Afghanistan

The Issue

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to urgently request that international organisations dedicated to alleviating suffering from natural disasters consider initiating a project to install and enhance seismometer networks in the most vulnerable districts and provinces of Afghanistan, such as Parvan, Herat, Badakhshan, Kabul, and others.

For many years, particularly over the last decade, thousands of Afghan people have tragically lost their lives or been buried under rubble due to high-magnitude earthquakes. While Afghanistan does have a seismic monitoring system in place, it is critically in need of expansion and improvement to its infrastructure, ongoing maintenance, and better training for engineers and technicians.

The frequency and severity of earthquakes in this region are on the rise, putting countless lives at risk. Implementing a robust earthquake monitoring and early warning system can save lives by providing timely alerts that allow local residents to evacuate their homes in advance of seismic events.

A well-distributed network of enhanced seismometers, coupled with comprehensive maintenance programmes and specialised training for local engineers could realistically provide the technological capabilities necessary to better predict and respond to earthquakes. This initiative will ultimately lead to reduced casualties and potential destruction in one of the world’s most earthquake-prone regions.

Thank you for your kind attention to this matter.
