The Issue
Updated 12th Feb - Since the beginning of 2026 villagers have had 22 new tyres, 2 cars have needed their tracking re configured and one car has needed a new wheel bearing.
- I've lived in Berwick St John for a few years, and recently, the state of our roads has become a pressing issue. The potholes around our village are not just a minor inconvenience; they're a significant hazard. These potholes are causing continuous damage to our vehicles, leading to avoidable repair costs that many of us can't afford. Beyond the immediate financial burden, there's a growing fear amongst villagers that serious accidents are imminent. We often find ourselves swerving into the oncoming lane just to avoid these gaping holes in the road, putting our safety and that of others at risk.
For the safety of our community, it's imperative that action is taken sooner rather than later. Statistically, potholes are a leading cause of road accidents in rural areas similar to ours. In a comprehensive survey conducted by the Asphalt Industry Alliance, it was reported that a significant number of drivers have experienced vehicle damage due to unrepaired potholes. The longer we leave this issue unaddressed, the higher the likelihood of an accident occurring.
We're calling on the Wiltshire Council to prioritise the repair of these potholes. The process needs to be both adequate and appropriate, ensuring a long-term solution rather than a temporary fix. By fixing these potholes, the council can prevent potential accidents, save residents money on vehicular repairs, and ultimately, make our village a safer place to live.
Please join me in urging Wiltshire Council to take immediate action on this matter. Sign this petition to show your support for safer roads in Berwick St John, and let’s prevent a tragedy before it strikes.
