Oppose bill HB 0274 / SB 0197 that gives young violent offenders shorter sentences!
The Issue
- Feb. 27. 2017
Please OPPOSE HB 0274 - SB 0197 which was previously introduced as HB 2028 in March 2016 by Representatives Jeremy Faison and Brenda Gilmore and keep our families and communities safe from violent offenders.
HB 0274 - SB 0197 as introduced, establishes a procedure whereby a person who committed a crime while a juvenile, was transferred to adult court for trial, and was sentenced as an adult may petition the court for sentence reduction after service of 15 years imprisonment.
This includes ALL violent crimes including rape, assault, and MURDER.
This bill is irresponsible and reckless. It will only lead to more innocent people being harmed and/or killed if this becomes law. Statistics point to the recidivism of offenders from 2005-2010 in a Bureau of Justice report that 3 out of 4 offenders were rearrested within 5 years.
Young offenders are some of the most most brutal killers in our country and they have been dutifully and legally sentenced by a jury of their peers in a court of law!
If those who petition for early release receive a reduced sentence, go free, and kill or harm someone AGAIN, then there will be blood on the hands of those who vote for this bill!
Most children know the difference between right and wrong by 7 or 8 years old. They know lying, stealing, and killing is WRONG! Those who CHOOSE to commit violent crime make a PERSONAL CHOICE and DECISION to do so. Their victims are nothing more to them then a means to an end. We mean nothing to them expect as an inconvenience or a target.
As someone whose parents were murdered by 3 young men ages 13, 18, and 20, all who had several years of criminal history and drug use when they CHOSE to break into my parents home and kill them, I find this bill reprehensible and irresponsible.
Ask yourself, does the thought of violent offenders being able to be released into your community, your neighborhood, after a short time in prison while they are still young, strong, and healthy and completely able and likely to resume their criminal path frighten or anger you? If so, PLEASE sign this petition to OPPOSE House Bill 2028 NOW!
The Tennessee House of Representatives will be revisiting this proposition this summer with changes per Rep. Faison.
Stand up, Speak out, and say NO to this horrible bill!
Stand up for victims of violent crime, the victims of the Gatlinburg fire, and their loved ones by letting our elected officials know that you oppose this bill.
In loving memory of Les and Carol Dotts and ALL victims of violent crime.
ALL lives matter!
Thank you, Jeanne Dotts Brykalski
In loving memory of Les and Carol Dotts, Bill Frye, Scott Loveday, Joe Ridings, Zaevion Dobson and many others who were murdered by "youthful" criminals and ALL victims of violent crime!
