Rename Red Onions to Purple Onions for More Accurate Representation

The Issue

Following on from a recent post I made in the dull men’s club group on Facebook and the fact I hold a personal affection for onions. Their varied flavours contribute to a myriad of dishes, adding richness and complexity. However, there has always been confusion with one type of onion: what we often refer to as 'red onion.' Despite its popular terminology, this type of onion is clearly not red but rather a beautiful shade of purple. As a lover of onions who is not colour blind, I find this discrepancy to be perplexing and misleading.

There are several reasons to enact this change. Firstly, by renaming red onions to purple onions, we create a consistent, less confusing naming system for onions. I'm surely not the only one puzzled by this anomaly in colour designation. It is unsettling to learn that the term "red onion" is an inaccurate descriptor of the vegetable's hue.

Moreover, according to the International Association of Color Consultants (IACC), colour perception impacts our comprehension and responses. By aligning the name of a product with its true colour, we can enable better overall understanding and ease any potential distress.

This colour-correcting move is not without precedent. In 2009, United Kingdom supermarket chain Tesco changed the labels of its 'red onions' to 'purple onions,' citing that it was more accurate and would reduce customer confusion (BBC News, 2009).

Let's support more accurate naming schemes for our vegetables, starting with acknowledging our so-called 'red onions' for what they truly are – purple. Sign the petition to rename red onions to purple onions, because accuracy matters.
