The Issue

On March 17, 2011, the community of Binghamton, NY, was shaken by a heart-wrenching tragedy. Seventeen-year-old Jeffrey T. Aissa, a bright and promising young man, lost his life in a tragic house fire deliberately set by an individual on the run for years. Jeffrey lived on Milford Street, on the East Side of Binghamton, where he made lifelong connections and left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

In the early hours of that fateful morning, as his family slept, the quiet suburban life was disrupted by an act of arson that tore apart the fabric of a family and left an indelible scar on our community. The fire claimed Jeffrey's life despite efforts to save all seven occupants from the blaze. The pain and loss endured by the Aissa family is immeasurable, but their resilience and enduring hope served as a beacon of strength for everyone in Binghamton.

After years of seeking justice, the perpetrator was located and tried. They were convicted by a jury and sentenced, bringing a semblance of closure to this long-standing chapter of heartbreak. However, the memory of Jeffrey and the need to honor his life remain.

Today, we have an opportunity to memorialize Jeffrey's spirit and cherish the love he brought to our community. We can do this by renaming Fairview Park to The Jeffrey T. Aissa Park. Such a gesture will not only honor Jeffrey's memory but also serve as a constant reminder of the resilience and unity that define Binghamton. This park, a place of joy and recreation, can become a symbol of healing and remembrance for families and future generations.

Renaming the park is not simply about changing a name—it is about acknowledging the significance of Jeffrey’s life and the values of community solidarity, compassion, and remembrance. We owe it to ourselves, to our city, and most importantly, to Jeffrey’s legacy to make this change.

Please join us in this effort to honor Jeffrey T. Aissa. Your support can help ensure that his memory lives on and continues to inspire hope and strength within our community. Sign this petition and advocate for a lasting tribute that future generations can cherish.
