In a city that is home to nearly a million Jews, it is shocking and unacceptable to have a tribute dedicated to the former head of Vichy France, a regime which voluntarily collaborated with Nazi Germany during World War II. Petain himself is responsible for turning in over 10,000.00 Jews during the Holocaust. Despite a successful journey in WW1's Battle of Verdun, his deplorable actions in WW2 simply cannot allow him to be labeled as a Hero. It is a painful irony to have this plaque in a region that holds key democratic institutions. It is high time we address this disheartening tribute and insist on its removal. By removing this plaque, we send a strong, unwavering message of love, tolerance and respect for human dignity. It is in this shared spirit that I implore all residents of New York and all who believe in upholding human dignity to join this campaign to have the Philippe Petain plaque removed from the NY Canon of Heroes.
