Petition: Remove the TAC Charge from Victorian Vehicle Registration

To the Victorian Government and relevant Ministers,

 

We, the undersigned residents and motorists of Victoria, call on the Victorian Government to remove the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) charge from the cost of vehicle registration, or substantially reduce it, while Victoria's road network continues to experience significant maintenance problems.

 

Victorian motorists are facing increasing cost-of-living pressures. Registration, fuel, insurance, servicing, repairs and other vehicle-related expenses place a significant financial burden on individuals, families and businesses.

 

For many Victorians, a vehicle is not a luxury — it is essential for getting to work, taking children to school, accessing healthcare, shopping and participating in everyday life.

 

At the same time, many motorists are experiencing roads with potholes, deteriorating surfaces, damaged shoulders, inadequate markings and other maintenance issues.

 

Poor road conditions can contribute to vehicle damage, increased maintenance costs and difficult driving conditions. Motorists should not feel that they are paying increasingly high registration costs while also having to absorb additional expenses resulting from inadequate road maintenance.

 

Helping Victorian families with the cost of living

Removing or substantially reducing the TAC component of vehicle registration would provide direct financial relief to Victorian motorists at a time when household budgets are under increasing pressure.

 

Even a modest reduction in annual registration costs can make a difference to families struggling with rising household expenses. For people who rely on their vehicles every day, reducing the cost of registration would help ease the overall cost of living and put money back into household budgets.

 

We believe the Victorian Government should consider practical measures that provide immediate relief to motorists while also addressing the underlying problems with Victoria's road network.

 

We therefore petition the Victorian Government to:

Remove the TAC charge from Victorian vehicle registration costs, or substantially reduce it while significant road-maintenance problems remain.

 

Provide cost-of-living relief to Victorian motorists by reducing the financial burden associated with vehicle registration.

 

Increase transparency around how registration and TAC charges are calculated and spent.

 

Prioritise funding for road maintenance and repairs, particularly potholes, deteriorating road surfaces and other safety-related defects.

 

Establish clear and measurable road-quality and maintenance standards across Victoria.

 

Provide motorists with greater accountability regarding how registration revenue and associated charges contribute to road safety and road infrastructure.

 

Consider further financial relief for Victorian motorists while significant road-maintenance issues remain unresolved.

 

Victorian motorists have a responsibility to drive safely and maintain their vehicles, but the Government also has a responsibility to provide and maintain safe public roads.

 

At a time when Victorians are being asked to manage rising household costs, reducing the cost of vehicle registration is one practical way the Government can provide direct relief to families, workers and businesses.

 

We respectfully ask the Victorian Government to listen to the concerns of Victorian motorists, provide meaningful cost-of-living relief and take action to improve the condition of the state's roads.

 

We support the removal or substantial reduction of the TAC charge from Victorian vehicle registration costs and call for greater investment, transparency, accountability and meaningful cost-of-living relief for Victorian motorist's.
