We, the people of the United States, have the God-given right to travel freely without surveillance. However, this fundamental right is under threat in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. FLOCK "safety" cameras have been installed across our community, recording and collecting data on its citizens without their consent. These cameras intrude upon our privacy, capturing moments of our lives without permission, which is a gross violation of our rights.

The installation of these surveillance cameras was done without transparent communication or obtaining the required approval from the community members who are subjected to constant monitoring. These devices, purportedly installed for safety purposes, have instead bred an atmosphere of suspicion and fear. We should not have to live in a place where every move is scrutinized by unaccountable entities.

According to recent studies, the effectiveness of such surveillance cameras in actually improving public safety is highly questionable. For instance, studies by the Urban Institute have indicated that high levels of surveillance do not necessarily correlate with drops in crime rates. Worse yet, this kind of invasive technology often disproportionately impacts marginalized groups who are already over-policed.

Moreover, there have been legal questions regarding the handling of data collected by these cameras. Who exactly has access to this information? How securely is it stored? And critically, how can this data potentially be misused?

Knowing that the very essence of our freedom is being jeopardized by unnecessary surveillance should alarm every concerned citizen. It is imperative that we take action to preserve the integrity of our rights and hold accountable those who would infringe upon them without just cause.

I urge the city officials of Steamboat Springs to listen to the voices of their constituents and remove the FLOCK surveillance cameras immediately. This is not just about reclaiming our city, but about holding our ground as Americans who value privacy and freedom above unwarranted surveillance.
