The Issue

In recent months, there's been growing concern among residents of Pittsburg, Kansas, about the installation of Flock Cameras across our city. When I first heard about these cameras, they were presented as harmless tools—simply capturing license plate details to aid law enforcement. However, I've seen firsthand how these systems are collecting far more data than we were led to believe. This exploitation of surveillance technology is a concern for our whole community and our right to privacy.

The use of Flock Cameras raises serious questions about the extent of the data collected and how securely this information is stored. With the increasing rate of cyber-attacks globally, it is naive to assume that these systems are immune from breaches. Each of these cameras gathering sensitive information poses a potential threat not only to individual privacy but to the security of the data itself. When private data, collected without explicit consent, is captured and stored, the potential for misuse grows exponentially.

We recognize the importance of security for our community. Still, that should never come at the cost of personal privacy or without transparent, informed consent from the citizens it affects. Surveillance without stringent safeguards creates a slippery slope towards infringement of basic rights.

Many cities worldwide are questioning the unchecked surveillance practices. They are demanding transparency, better security measures, and in some cases, removal of such surveillance systems. We, too, can take this stand and call for a halt to the use of Flock Cameras in our city.

The path forward should involve installing less intrusive safety measures and focusing on community-led policing that respects privacy. We need to explore and propose alternative solutions that do not compromise civil liberties.

Sign this petition to urge our local authorities to remove Flock Cameras from Pittsburg, Kansas. Let's take a stand for our right to privacy and demand transparency and accountability in how our city handles our personal data. Together, we can work towards a safer and more respectful community for everyone.
