Overland, Missouri recently made the controversial decision to install Flock Surveillance cameras throughout the city, including Wild Acres Park. For many of us, this decision hits home because it intrudes on the peace and sense of safety we cherished in our public spaces. The park, a place where our children gather to play and families come to enjoy quality time, should be free of such unwarranted surveillance.

Concerns about these devices go beyond mere discomfort or the possibility of inconvenience. The data collected through these surveillance systems has been weaponized against certain communities, particularly affecting our immigrant populations and people of color. Such practices violate our community's trust and, more importantly, the Fourth Amendment, which guards against unreasonable searches. Flock systems treat every citizen as a potential criminal.

Flock Systems are misused frequently to facilitate crimes, especially crimes of domestic violence.  The data is made available to tens of thousands of users and proper control of protected and personal information does not happen.

The installation of these surveillance devices undermines the fundamental principles of freedom and privacy that this country was built upon. It is imperative that we protect these values by demanding the removal of the Flock Cameras from our beloved city. The safety of our citizens, especially those most vulnerable, cannot be compromised.
