The Issue

Government surveillance is increasingly encroaching on the lives of American citizens, threatening the fundamental rights and freedoms upon which our nation was built. In New Trier Township, the introduction of flock cameras is a glaring example of this troubling trend. These cameras, used to monitor and recognize license plates, are often installed without sufficient public discourse or transparency, violating our privacy and civil liberties.

As a resident of New Trier Township, I am deeply concerned about the pervasive camera surveillance that is encircling our community. These flock cameras not only threaten our constitutional right to privacy but also create an environment of unwarranted suspicion, pushing the boundaries of individual freedoms. The presence of these cameras implies that every person is a potential suspect, which could lead to social anxiety and distrust within our community.

The nationwide increase in surveillance technologies is alarming, with the potential misuse of the gathered data by governmental agencies or possible breaches leading to unauthorized access to personal information. It's crucial to remember that freedom is a core value of the United States, and unchecked surveillance is a step away from those principles. A report by the ACLU has highlighted various instances where surveillance has led to racial profiling and unjust treatment of innocent individuals, making it clear that we must remain vigilant against such technologies infringing on our rights.

Instead of resorting to invasive surveillance methods, New Trier Township should focus on community-based approaches to ensure safety, such as neighborhood watch initiatives and increased community policing, which have proven effective and maintain citizen trust without infringing on personal liberties. We must engage in open dialogues about the necessity, efficacy, and ethical use of surveillance technologies to arrive at solutions that respect our rights.

I urge the authorities of New Trier Township to reconsider the implementation of flock cameras and instead prioritize transparent and consent-based safety measures. Protect our privacy, respect our rights.

Sign this petition to call for the removal of flock cameras from our township and to protect the civil liberties of every resident.
