We, the students of Tulane University do not consent to the surveillance of our campus. We do not consent to the  collection of our data  nor have faith in the companies who hold that data due to their proven willingness to sell or give it away. The data collected by Flock is and has been used thousands of times in its short life span already to violate and harass the very citizenry it was meant to protect. Tulane is a university that does not have security or safety issues yet have decided to spring 13 Flock cameras throughout campus with the intention of more, under the noses of its students bypassing any of our opinions. This petition and fight is one of necessity. As we enter into the hazy future of Ai and mass surveillance there must be guard rails that protect and enshrine the right of privacy and protection for every Tulane student. As a community committed to fostering an environment of trust, openness, and academic freedom, it is imperative that we address the intrusion of these technologies in our educational spaces.

AI surveillance systems have the capability to monitor, analyze, and store vast amounts of data about individuals' behaviors and movements. This technology, while often marketed as a tool for enhancing security, poses significant risks to personal privacy and the autonomy of students and staff.  The implementation of AI surveillance not only undermines the trust between the university administration and its community but also stands at odds with the core values of academic freedom and civil liberties.

Additionally, there is little evidence to suggest that AI surveillance effectively increases safety on campus. Studies have shown that such technologies could lead to over-policing and disproportionately impact marginalized groups, creating an environment of fear rather than safety. As members of the Tulane community, we must consider whether the potential benefits genuinely outweigh these serious risks.

We propose the immediate removal of all Flock cameras and AI surveillance technologies from Tulane University's campus. Instead, the university should invest in fostering a community-based approach to safety, which includes better lighting, increased presence of trained human personnel, and the encouragement of an open dialogue among students and staff about security needs and concerns.
