In 2020, many familes were hit by a wave of illnesses. My spouse was diagnosed with long COVID, and our lives took an unexpected turn. During this tumultuous period, we were unable to use several gift vouchers that we had received from friends and family. These vouchers should have been a source of joy and relief for us, gifts meant to bring moments of happiness during difficult times. Unfortunately, due to their expiry dates, they expired before we got the chance to enjoy them. When we reached out to the companies, explaining our situation, our pleas were met with indifference. They were unwilling to extend the deadlines or offer any solutions. 

This isn't just our story—it's the story of countless others who, due to unforeseen circumstances, were unable to use their gift vouchers. It’s disheartening to think that these companies, which have already benefited financially from the sale of these vouchers, refuse to honor them indefinitely. Gift vouchers are bought with money that the companies get instantly, and in exchange, the consumer gets a promise of future service or product. Not honoring this promise after an arbitrary lapse of time goes against the spirit of gifting itself.

A study conducted by the UK Gift Card & Voucher Association found that approximately 6% of gift card balances go unredeemed annually. This lapse results in an estimated $1 billion loss for consumers every year, according to the National Retail Federation report. These figures are a stark reminder that an inflexible system exists where consumer rights are not being prioritized.

By eliminating expiry dates on gift vouchers, we can ensure that the true value of these gifts are preserved, especially in these financially tough times.They should be a token of generosity and good spirit, not a financial win for the issuing companies at the expense of the consumer. Companies can still keep their positive brand image intact while fostering customer loyalty if they adopt this more consumer-friendly approach.
