Remove Brandon’s Confederate Monument – Hate Has No Place in Our Towns
The Issue
The Confederate monument in the heart of Brandon, Mississippi, does not represent heritage — it represents hate.
Erected in 1907, during a time when Black Mississippians were systematically disenfranchised and denied basic rights, this statue glorifies a regime that fought to uphold slavery.
Its location in one of the busiest parts of town is not an accident — it sends a message. One that says the pain and history of Black residents are secondary to honoring those who fought to keep them enslaved. That’s unacceptable.
The monument belongs in a historical context, not a place of public honor. Relocating it to a cemetery or museum would preserve history without celebrating oppression.
We call on Brandon city officials: do the right thing. Remove this monument from the city center. History belongs in books and museums — not on pedestals in the heart of our community.
Let’s show that Brandon stands for unity, equality, and a better future for all.
