The Issue

The intrusion of flock cameras in Johnson and Hood Counties represents a significant overreach by the government, infringing upon the privacy of law-abiding citizens such as myself. It is imperative that we safeguard the freedoms that are foundational to our society. In Johnson and Hood Counties, our local authorities have installed numerous flock cameras throughout our communities. These surveillance tools were initially justified as a means to enhance public safety. However, they now seem more like a method to monitor and record the daily movements of innocent civilians.

The pervasive presence of these cameras has created a de facto constant surveillance system which could lead to the collection of massive amounts of data on individuals going about their daily lives. The promise of security through surveillance is not an adequate justification for this unwarranted invasion of privacy. Law enforcement's ability to create files on every resident’s movements, without their consent, is a clear violation of our rights.

There is limited evidence to support the efficacy of these cameras in significantly decreasing crime rates in our counties. According to studies from reputable sources such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, increased surveillance often leads to false positives, unnecessary alerts, and general mistrust within the community. We must question the true utility of these cameras. Are they effectively assisting law enforcement, or are they merely tools for encroaching surveillance that erodes our freedoms?

We propose that local authorities in Johnson and Hood Counties re-evaluate the use of flock cameras. Alternative methods such as community policing initiatives, neighborhood watch programs, and increased public spaces engagement could more effectively improve safety without compromising our fundamental right to privacy.

Our personal freedom and right to privacy are at stake. We cannot allow intrusive surveillance to become the norm. Your signature on this petition is a stand for privacy, a call for action against unwarranted government surveillance, and a demand for the removal of flock cameras from our community.
